January 8, 2025 – Miami, FL – Cuban artist Fernando Almenares Rivera, known as Nando OBDC and coordinator of the independent art collective Arte Prohibido, is facing accusations from the Cuban government of engaging in sabotage activities at the Lenin Park in Havana. These allegations were made public by his wife, Adriana Machado, following a recent visit to Nando at the Cuban State Security headquarters, Villa Marista, where she was informed of the charges.

According to Adriana, Nando maintains his innocence in the face of these allegations. In her communication with ADN Cuba, she shared that the artist had been linked to a fire at Lenin Park, but he denies any involvement. Nando's mother was able to visit him after five days of silence, confirming that he appeared to be in good health during their brief meeting.

Following Nando's arrest, the Cuban State Security conducted a raid at his home, seizing personal belongings such as his computer and USB drives. The authorities also took the Cuban flag that had been displayed in Nando's residence and documented images of his artwork.

Nando OBDC is an active member of the Committee for Racial Integration (CIR) and is listed in the Diverso Cuba catalog. Recently, he co-curated, alongside “Negro con acento,” the collective exhibition Arte Prohibido: Desde Cuba in Miami, which was part of the Fuego contra el Fuego initiative. The show featured works by Cuban artists who have raised their voices in protest for the freedom of Cuba. He has also participated in other initiatives such as Mesa de Diálogo de la Juventud Cubana.

Known for his outspoken lyrics, Nando OBDC has collaborated with several prominent Cuban artists such as Marichal, Maykel Osorbo, David D Omni, and Navy Pro. His politically charged music, produced in Cuba, has drawn the attention and repression of the Cuban government.

On January 1st, the Observatory of Cultural Rights (ODC) joined the international calls for Nando’s immediate release, demanding an end to the harassment of independent art and artists by the Cuban regime.

Estas acusaciones fueron hechas públicas por su esposa, Adriana Machado, tras una reciente visita a Nando en la sede de la Seguridad del Estado cubana, Villa Marista, donde fue informada de las acusaciones.

Según Adriana, Nando mantiene su inocencia ante estas acusaciones. En su comunicación con ADN Cuba, ella compartió que el artista había sido vinculado a un incendio en el Parque Lenin, pero él niega cualquier implicación. Nando OBDC es miembro activo del Comité de Integración Racial (CIR) y figura en el catálogo de Diverso Cuba. Recientemente ha comisariado, junto a «Negro con acento», la exposición colectiva Arte Prohibido:Desde Cuba en Miami, que formaba parte de la iniciativa Fuego contra el Fuego.La muestra presentaba obras de artistas cubanos que han alzado su voz en protesta por la libertad de Cuba. También ha participado en otras iniciativas como la Mesa de Diálogo de la Juventud Cubana.
